Adult Room

Welcome to the Adult Room.

The dark lurks beneath.

Here are some adult books I read that - in my humble opinion - deserve more recognition than they actually have/had. Note: I wrote all Pike's titles down, but I only own some of them so far. As usual, bold indicates I haven't read a book yet, but I plan to. Reviews (and more titles) coming in time.

CHRISTOPHER PIKE

He's written very few adult books, but they are worth reading - though I'm personally not satisfied with Sati, but that's just me maybe. Check out The Season of Passage...if you like a blend of sci-fi, supernatural and horror, that is. On second thoughts, it's not like I'm into horror that much (for instance, Stephen King's stuff is usually too heavy for my tastes), but I loved the book all the same - so maybe non-horror fans will too.
Titles are in chronological order BTW.

Sati (09/90) *contemporary with a twist  -> [you'll have to judge for yourselves...]
The Season of Passage (02/92) *sci-fi, supernatural, horror
The Listeners (01/95) *sci-fi, supernatural, horror
The Cold One (12/95)
*sci-fi, supernatural, horror
The Blind Mirror (05/03) *thriller, supernatural, horror
Falling (03/07) *thriller
The Sixth Door -> [a future release Pike is working on]

JERI SMITH-READY

I find her adult books a great addition to the urban fantasy genre, but on the other hand, I have reservations about her teen Shade trilogy. From the excerpts I read, it seems to me that while Smith-Ready is at her best when dealing with adult characters, the voice she gives to her teens is not as convincing and pleasant (I don't mean "pleasant" as in "lovely and sweet to the ears" - I mean "pleasant" as in "I hear you and I sympathize with your predicament, though I may not share your feelings all the time"). The sharp wit I like in Ciara Griffin from the WVMP Radio series doesn't sound good to me when applied to 16 years old Aura Salvatore from Shade. Anyway, here goes the list of Smith-Ready's adult novels.

   Wicked Game (05/08) *urban fantasy
